B2B B Corps Call – Thursday, January 13th
Dear Fellow B’s,
Happy New Year!
We are excited to continue creating community by deepening our connections and working towards growing our B’s together. We hope to continue seeing you at our monthly meetings, every 2nd Thursday of the month, at 12:00-1:00 PT/ 3:00-4:00 ET.
We had an engaging and fruitful conversation at our meeting last November (we take every December off due to the busy-ness of the holidays). Here are some of the noteworthy gems that we’d like to share with you:
-
- Who we donate to, and where we spend precious volunteer time deserve scrutiny and consideration. Thanks to Prof. Kristin Joys of Do Good Well, for these resources on giving and volunteering: https://philanthropynetwork.org/news/giving-usa-2021-year-unprecedented-events-and-challenges-charitable-giving-reached-record-47144
Here is a website for volunteering virtually: https://www.catchafire.org
And a national network of volunteer opportunities: https://www.volunteermatch.org
Here is a website by the author of Drawdown with a new resource where individuals & families can make punch lists of things they plan to do in their communities to make a positive impact: https://regeneration.orgWe think volunteering with B Locals is a great way for folks in the B Corp community to get involved: https://bcorporation.net/news/connect-your-local-b-corp-community.

- In terms of giving, Rose wants to share that fellow B Corp, Andrew Schuricht’s Valor CSR helped her firm, Green Retirement, formalize their donation process by setting up Green Retirement Foundation, a donor-advised fund that Valor administers. For B Corps, Andy deposits $500 of the set up fee back to your account for distributions.
-
- Caroline Asiala of Centrico Digital shared this New York Times video, Liberal Hypocrisy is Fueling American Inequality. Here’s How. | NYT Opinion, that might serve to pique your mind and question assumptions.
-
- Carolyn McMaster of Think Shift Communications is happy to chat about the possibility of forming a PR collaborative for our B’s if that might be of interest to a viable number. To be cost-effective as well as plain effective it’s preferable that the group has some kind of commonality — product space, say, or end goal, like awareness of an issue or getting out front on a policy concern. Another option might be workshops/training that would enable very small brands to do media outreach on their own. Interested? Please join our January meeting and let us know.
- Caroline and Jenn Diesi of Geek Girl Tech were interested in how our women leaders can get on boards – both for corporate and non profits. Kristin, who is a fountain of knowledge, shared these resources: Here are some great resources on serving on nonprofit boards (listed in order from most-respected to less-respected sources):

https://www.thebalancesmb.com/how-to-be-on-a-nonprofit-board-without-regretting-it-2501802Because serving on corporate boards can be quite lucrative, the process for landing a seat usually involves a headhunter and/or executive recruiting firm and can be quite costly to get one’s foot in the door. There are a number of quite expensive training/certification programs, like:

https://www.gsb.stanford.edu/faculty-research/centers-initiatives/cgri/executive-education
Quite a lot to chew through and we’re sure you have other topics that you’d want to discuss and/or issues you want covered. We hope to see more of you this year, starting with our January meeting, this Thursday, the 13th, via Zoom.
Yours in service,
Rose and Christopher
